- Introduction

- Schools at their core are institutionalized education systems. A definition that projects a cold and miserable system. Unfortunately for many students that definition is not far off of their reality. Schools should be warm and comforting environments that fosters learning. Students should feel like they are challenged and productive when in class. To achieve this idealistic view of schooling a lot has to change. For one, schools must move to be more inclusive of more students. One are that schools need to become more inclusive in is the personality of their students. Students personalities specifically weather they are introverted or extroverted has a large effect on how they learn. Currently the schooling system tends to favor extroverted students. This is mainly attributed to the value given to participation and collaboration in classrooms. While both of these things are important, they tend to be most helpful for extroverted students. Therefore it is important that schools and teachers realize that other students learn better through independent working time, and fins ways to pair it with collaboration.
- My question
- Other people have discovered this issue and looked into what can be done about it. Most of the existing ideas are little activities that create a temporary solution. Many of these educators praises the “Think-Pair-Share” activity for its ability to give learners the space to digest information and then come up with ideas on their own (Iasevoli). While finding activities that work towards including all students is a great step forward. I believe it is important to have classrooms that set up to be inclusive for all students, introverted and extroverted. There are many types of classrooms that are used in schools today. There is the standard classroom, the discussion based classroom, the flipped classroom, and competency based learning. The question that remains is: To what extent can today’s classrooms foster equity between introverted and extroverted students?
- Thesis - Not sure where this will be placed…
- The model of a classroom has a limited effect on the equitability between introverted and Extroverted students. In reality It comes down to the individual teacher and how they construct their class. But classrooms that are based on more individualized learning such as competency based learning or Blended learning, teachers are more inclined to take into the needs of every student therefore classrooms will have the ability to be more equitable between introverted and extroverted students.

- Qualifiers
- Introvert - extrovert spectrum
- This paper will talk about introverts and extroverts and what that means in the context of school. There are many definitions of what each word means. In this paper, an introvert is someone who gets re-energised by being alone. While an extrovert gets re-energised by being with other people. It is also important to note that it is not a black and white situation. It is best to look at people's personalities as a spectrum with introvert on one end, extrovert on the other, and ambivert in the middle. A person can fall anywhere along the spectrum. Due to the variability of personalities. Not all introverts or extroverts are alike. There is no one quality that fits all introverts because everyone is different. The same goes for extroverts. So for the purpose of this paper I am going to generalize based off of the research I have done, the data I have collected, and the people I have talked to.
- Collaboration is not just beneficial to extroverts… but in order for introverts to be able to collaborate effectively many must have time to think

- A Brief History of Education - (schooling)
- The American schooling system is best compared to boot camp. Both schools and boot camps have similar values of respect, rule abiding, obedience, and submissive. This is what students are trained to be. The are prepared to enter into a job where they will follow the rules. This system worked well in the past when jobs such as factory workers valued these things. Now as we look at the economy and the jobs that need to be filled, they value different qualities. This is why there are lots of high level and high paying jobs that remain empty because americans are not qualified to fill these jobs. - Why our schooling system is the way it is becomes evident once we look into how it came to be.
- Schools In US first used to be outlets for religion (1640’s ish)
- Puritan Congregationalist
- Diversity made this harder
- King of Prussia Frederick II (late 1700’s)
- Instill Loyalty to the crown
- What to think
- Thomas Jefferson 1779
- “Raking a few geniuses from the rubbish”
- Horace Mann brought public schools based on Prussian system to US (1843)
- Prior all private schools for the wealthy
- Training for factories
- Obedience
- Intelligence Testing used to track students (1932)
- Brown Vs. Board (1954)
- Many schools stay segregated despite supreme court ruling
- No child Left Behind (2001)
- Today's economy… What do students need to be able to do
- Think for themselves… Be innovative!
- Why We Should Care
- Lose out on the optimal work of introverted students
- Asking introverts to learn in an extroverted classroom is simply unnatural and uncomfortable for many students.
- Tracking
- Tracking in and of itself is problematic.
- Modern day segregation in schools
- Self fulfilling prophecies
- Due to behavioral “problems”
- Tracking in and of itself is problematic.
- DCAPs and BCAPs
- There are certain things that should be considered “good teaching” and not personal accommodations
- Cold Calling… Get it out!
- Sitting where kids want
- Eyecontact
- Many things should just be a conversation with a teacher.
- Good bc it makes students feel like they can advocate for themselves
- Less alienating
- Teaches don't have to worry about keeping track of as many personalized plans they can just do their job and even more students are happy!
- There are certain things that should be considered “good teaching” and not personal accommodations
- Lose out on the optimal work of introverted students
- Lecture Based Classroom
- Explain
- Standard form of a classroom where students are arranged in rows and they face the teacher in order to gain “Knowledge”
- Banking system of education… Jacob would be so proud!
- Advantages for introverts
- Time to think about concepts and Ideas
- Advantages for extroverts
- Rewarded for speaking up
- Suggestions on Strategies to Make it More Equitable
- Depends on if students are rewarded for speaking up or not…
- Honestly not a fab method in my opinion.
- Un equitable to many typical extroverts bc it removes the collaboration and the group work. So fix that...
- Explain
- Discussion Based Classroom
- Explain
- Often classroom is set up in a circle and students work through information and build upon ideas through discussions
- Harkness method of teaching
- minimal teacher intervention
- Student centered
- Socratic seminars
- Conclusions in mind that teachers guide students to realizing
- Teacher centered
- “Socrates engaged in questioning of his students in an unending search for truth”
- Advantages for introverts
- Student driven learning
- Less loaded time to speak up in class…
- Can be used for good collaboration, if there is inward thinking time
- Advantages for extroverts
- Rewarded for speaking up
- Lost of time to share ideas… if other students don't speak up
- Student driven learning
- Great Collaboration
- “It allows extroverted students to participate frequently with praise, and makes introverted students feel uncomfortable, stupid, and stressed to go to class each day” - Annie, student survey
- “I'm not outgoing nor am I articulate. I may be able to come up with my own opinions, but I have a hard time sharing them, and people often seem to misunderstand what I'm saying” Thomas, student survey
- Suggestions on Strategies to Make it More Equitable.
- Have some time for independent thought prior to the discussions, like telling students what the next class will be about so they can get their thoughts and ideas in order.
- Have some system that prevents s few students from dominating the conversation - If that includes limiting their talking or promoting others to talk… If it is the latter be sure that students feel comfortable and not singled out.
- Explain
- Flipped Classroom
- Explain - Blended Learning / Student Based learning
- Bulk of learning occurs outside of class
- Class time can be used for numerous things… but hopefully questions or activities or projects or discussions
- Be sure that the outside learning isn't passive or students will not engage.
- Advantages for introverts
- This style of classroom allows students to process and learn on their own time.
- Advantages for extroverts
- Class time can be used as a time for collaboration and there could be more time for questions and talking over ideas.
- Suggestions on Strategies to Make it More Equitable
- Important how classtime is used. Don't overcompensate and force all students to only work on computers or alone.
- Then again be sure that the class time isn't inequitable. What I mean is if you cold call or grade harshly on participation the class will not be inclusive to introverted students.
- Outside of class is not super timely or passive.
- Explain - Blended Learning / Student Based learning
- Overall Conclusions
- Look at thesis - It doesn't really matter. If a teacher decides to teach in a way that students are not included it will not be equitable but if they teach in a way that follows some of the suggestions previously mentioned within each section, then their classroom will be more equitable.
- Best Thing to do? PERSONALIZED LEARNING :)
- Turning to student based learning looks daunting for teachers
- but after the “initial energy” input, things get easier for teachers.
- This is most attainable with actually using technology! We have it so lets make the most of it.
- What is personalized learning
- Students have some control in their pace and how they learn materials
- Ideally frees up the teacher to help out students who need it.
